Celebrating the Blue Moon

This Friday August 31, 2012 the moon will be in Pisces and according to many astrologer it will be a sensitive, reflective Full Moon, thanks to the heavy water energy.

I did not have the qi to write a blog about the full moon. We are still in surreal mode here after our dear Zevo's passing. So i took the liberty of posting a few links below with information on what a Blue Moon is.

This past month i have been working on a few new lines of art to wear. There at least thirty new pieces to be photographed and listed on the Planet Calamari Etsy Shop. We have decided to wait until after the Blue Moon to take on this project.

To celebrate this Full Blue Moon and the start of a new beginning, Zevo's new life as a spirit-poose and the end of a long hot summer, The Planet Calamari Etsy Shop is having a Once in a Blue Moon Sale. Take 20% off all art to wear...even the marked down pieces by using the code BLUEMOON when checking out.

May this Labor Day weekend of the Blue Moon bring you and your loved ones peace, magic and a new beginning.

What is a Blue Moon?

There are in fact two definitions for a blue moon. According to the more recent definition, a blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. For a blue moon to occur, the first of the full moons must appear at or near the beginning of the month so that the second will fall within the same month (the average span between two moons is 29.5 days). The full Moon on Aug. 31, 2012, will be this type of blue moon; it will be the second full moon in one month.

The Other Kind of Blue Moon

The older definition, which is recorded in early issues of the Maine Farmer's Almanac, states that the blue moon is the third full moon in a season that has four full moons. Why would one want to identify the third full moon in a season of four full moons? The answer is complex, and has to do with the Christian ecclesiastical calendar.
Some years have an extra full moon—13 instead of 12. Since the identity of the moons was important in the ecclesiastical calendar (the Paschal Moon, for example, used to be crucial for determining the date of Easter), a year with a 13th moon skewed the calendar, since there were names for only 12 moons. By identifying the extra, 13th moon as a blue moon, the ecclesiastical calendar was able to stay on track.
For more background information on the controversy over the two definitions of blue moon, see the Sky and Telescope article, "What's a Blue Moon?" In it they explain how the two different definitions of a blue moon came about—including their own role in introducing the second, modern definition"

"Blue moons exist due to our calendar months being imperfectly synched to the lunar months. It takes 29.5 days for the moon to orbit Earth, during which sky watchers observe all of its phases. All calendar months, aside from February, have 30 or 31 days, resulting in the occasional two full moons within a single month.
While blue moons are rare, they can be predicted to take place every three years or so, with the next one scheduled to take place in July 2015."
Once in a Blue Moon
"Blue moon" appears to have been a colloquial expression long before it developed its calendrical senses. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first reference to a blue moon comes from a proverb recorded in 1528:
If they say the moon is blue,
We must believe that it is true.
Saying the moon was blue was equivalent to saying the moon was made of green (or cream) cheese; it indicated an obvious absurdity. In the 19th century, the phrase until a blue moon developed, meaning "never." The phrase, once in a blue moon today has come to mean "every now and then" or "rarely"—whether it gained that meaning through association with the lunar event remains uncertain.

Recycled Prayers Series

The Recycled Prayer Art to Wear series all started with a tangled capiz shell curtain on its way to the kill shelter also known as the dumpster. I purchased it at a reduced price thus rescuing it.

A week later i adopted several books my parents bought in Italy and a box of holy cards that were destine to go to the Goodwill or worse... their recycle bin aka the garbage can. That very same week i took an auspicious trip to the National Cathedral in Washington DC alone. I believe it was the combination of meditating on stain glass windows for two hours, lighting candles for miracles, fracturing my foot and then losing our electric power during a thunder storm for  3 days that this idea was born.

Mistress Nemo Dons A Steampunk Octopus Neck Sculpture

What would Captain Nemo's Mistress wear to the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Ball? I am sure it would be a lovely midnight black gown with purple and sea blue sequins, lace gloves with a gorgeous updo.

I have always been intrigued with undersea creatures, especially cephalopods. It is no surprise that my favorites are the squid and octopus. They are able to change color faster than a chameleon and can also change texture and body shape. If those camouflage techniques don't work, they can still "disappear" in a cloud of ink, Magic in the deep blue sea.

This one of a kind octopus neck sculpture was created by crocheting non-tarnish bronze copper wire into strands then plaiting them. I used an assortment of recycled, and vintage glass beads in hues of violet, purple, aurora borealis, sea green and blue weaved into the strands. A brass victorian octopus charm is securely wired onto a recycled brilliant blue capiz shell. The shell measures about 2 inches in diameter. This necklace has an old world Steampunk victorian feel.

This one of a kind neck piece is lightweight and measures about 19 inches. It closes with a bronze lobster claw clasp. The wire can be gently scrunched smaller or into a slightly different shape to compliment your neck.

I have a special octopus bracelet listed at https://www.etsy.com/listing/97969376/octopus-garden-crocheted-wired-wrist.

Inspiration from under the sea...

This necklace was created by crocheting bronze non-tarnish wire while weaving glass beads through the strands in various hues of blue, sea green and lavender. The effect gives an under the sea look. Perhaps buried treasures hidden in the coral reefs. Could this necklace be a romantic gift from Captain Jack Sparrow?

I always loved the soundtrack from the Disney movie The Little Mermaid. (Not a fan of the movie. Walt would not have been impressed by the computer animation.) However the lyrics of Under The Sea bring images of swimming through the coral reefs with sea turtles and buried sea treasures.

This bracelet was created by crocheting bronze and silver plated non-tarnish wire while weaving glass beads in various hues of blue, sea green and lavender. Perhaps it fell off a mermaid's wrist while she was playing with dolphins.

In ancient Greek mythology, Amphitrite was a sea-goddess and wife of Poseidon. Of course living with Poseidon must have been trying. So sometimes she would sneak away on holiday with her girl friends and a good bottle of sea wine. Splashing to fun music and dancing the night away. Girls with flippers just want to have fun.

These earrings were created by using recycled blue Capiz shells rescued from a shell beaded curtain that was being tossed away. (There should be a rescue shelter for sea shells.)
I crocheted strands of delicate pink silver plated wire with sea green glass beads. A delicate blue sea shell hangs from this strand.

Under the Sea lyrics from
The Disney movie The Little Mermaid

The seaweed is always greener
In somebody else's lake
You dream about going up there
But that is a big mistake
Just look at the world around you
Right here on the ocean floor
Such wonderful things surround you
What more is you lookin' for?

Under the sea
Under the sea
Darling it's better
Down where it's wetter
Take it from me
Up on the shore they work all day
Out in the sun they slave away
While we devotin'
Full time to floatin'
Under the sea

Down here all the fish is happy
As off through the waves they roll
The fish on the land ain't happy
They sad 'cause they in their bowl
But fish in the bowl is lucky
They in for a worser fate
One day when the boss get hungry
Guess who's gon' be on the plate

Under the sea
Under the sea
Nobody beat us
Fry us and eat us
In fricassee
We what the land folks loves to cook
Under the sea we off the hook
We got no troubles
Life is the bubbles
Under the sea
Under the sea
Since life is sweet here
We got the beat here
Naturally

Romancing the Tree

Celtic Healing Tree of Love Pendant

This piece was inspired by the magic of Avalon, the dreams of wandering through green rolling hills in Ireland and dancing with hobbits in the Shire.

This one of a kind pendant was created by sculpting a vibrant shade of purple non-tarnish copper silver plated wire into a heart. Using bronze wire tree branches and roots were shaped. Seed beads in various hues of greens, blue greens and chartreuse were added as leaves . A turquoise glass round bead with gold flecks resembling the planet earth holds the heart.

Tree of Life Symbolism
"The symbol of Tree of Life represents different qualities and virtues like wisdom, strength, protection, beauty, bounty and redemption. It is also considered to be the symbol of 'Creator'. This tree is associated with the creator because it provides protection, supports abundant fruit production and thereby, regeneration. This analogy can also be used to describe the life of humans. We as humans develop 'roots' of our beliefs, 'branch out' by means of wisdom and the 'trunk' (mind & body) keeps them connected." read more at www.buzzle.com/articles/tree-of-life-meaning.

Pretty in Pink Heart Earrings

This pair of feminine earrings were created using a lovely shade of pink copper silver plated wire sculpted into a heart shape. A pastel pink flat round glass bead adorned by two pink glass seed beads on pink wire allows the heart to dangle. Simple, elegant and oh so girlie!

Pink is the color of love, romance and the most feminine on the spectrum. It is the symbol for hope for breast cancer awareness.

I'd like to be in an Octopus' Garden ....

This one of a kind bracelet was created by crocheting non-tarnish copper wire in hues of vibrant purple, sea green, and midnight black. After the wire was crocheted, the cuff was sewn together with more wire to make it stable and to add a more sculptured effect.
I used an assortment of recycled, and vintage glass beads in hues of amethyst, violet, purple, pastel pink, aurora borealis, turquoise and deep blue. These were weaved into the wire with teal glass beads, blue seashell beads and sea foam green freshwater pearls creating brilliant reflections and hues seen under the deep sea.

A brass octopus charm is securely wired onto the cuff and is adorned by tiny faceted glass beads. He seems to be sitting in a coral reef waiting for Ringo Starr to serenade him. Or perhaps Captain Nemo will stop by for tea.

Octopus' Garden
Sing along with Ringo Starr and the Beatles!

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octopus
"Octopuses have two eyes and four pairs of arms, and like other cephalopods they are bilaterally symmetric. An octopus has a hard beak, with its mouth at the center point of the arms. Octopuses have no internal or external skeleton (although some species have a vestigial remnant of a shell inside their mantle), allowing them to squeeze through tight places. Octopuses are among the most intelligent and behaviorally flexible of all invertebrates.

The octopus inhabits many diverse regions of the ocean, including coral reefs, pelagic waters, and the ocean floor. They have numerous strategies for defending themselves against predators, including the expulsion of ink, the use of camouflage and deimatic displays, their ability to jet quickly through the water, and their ability to hide. An octopus trails its eight arms behind it as it swims. All octopuses are venomous, but only one group, the blue-ringed octopuses, is known to be deadly to humans

Romancing the SteamPunk ...

Imagine being in the Victorian era with advanced machines still based on 19th century technology and a tad of the super natural. Gorgeous old world clothing with a touch of whimsy. For more information on steampunk please visit www.steampunk.com

I created this steampunk inspired necklace by hand stringing vintage buttons, assorted glass beads and recycled baubles on non-tarnish bronze copper wire. The wire was then crocheted into strands and weaved them together. Antique Mother of Pearl buttons, vintage flowered bronze and copper buttons, carved flower buttons, amber beads and glass jewel toned beads are intertwined into a beautiful free form necklace. The combination of these hues combined with the bronze wire has a victorian feel.

Sunsets, sand and dancing on the beach. Pirates, treasures and flip flops. This is Parrothead chic, and much less expensive than a ticket to a Buffett concert!

This colorful neck sculpture was created by crocheting non-tarnish copper wire in shades of black, vibrant purple and silver with intertwined with faceted glass crystals and aurora borealis glass seed beads. These beads reflect the purple amethyst and sea blue hues when they hit the light. I added blue seashell beads, fairy snail sea shells, fresh water pearls, and several recycled ceramic beads, lamp-work beads in shades of purple, cobalt and amethyst glass crystals. Other vintage glass beads are woven into the sculpture. A hand blown glass sea blue fish bead hangs from the wire and delicately moves.

What Would Abby Sciuto Wear to the Prom?

What would Abby Sciuto wear to an elegant event? If i had a daughter, i would hope that it could be one like Abby. Smart, quirky, with a flair of alternative thinking. Oh to be young again only this time instead of being a hippie, be a cute little baby bat goth girl. Perfect black bob haircut, blue lipstick and fun vampie clothing. If only...

Oh and if you don't know who Abby is you must watch some NCIS reruns. After being without TV for 8 years, i must say i am grateful for cable TV and the USA channel!!!

This unique wrist sculpture was inspired by the Queen of Goth Genius of NCIS and watching way too many Tim Burton movies!

I created this bracelet by crocheting black colored non-tarnish copper wire along with aurora borealis glass seed beads. Faceted magnetized hematite beads were woven into the wire interspersed with glass faceted beads. This combo creates a magical effect of reflecting light and subtle color like dew drops on a spider web.

Hematite is known for its properties to ground and protects us. Strengthens our connection with the Mother Earth, and makes us feel safe and secure. Known to add courage, strength, endurance and vitality. This stone dissolves negativity and prevents one from absorbing the negativity of others. It is also used for healing the blood, liver and kidneys.

Silver frosted bells dangle from this piece. Chic yet oh so Tim Burton! This wrist art could be worn to a formal event, goth prom or with a little black dress.

Measures about 7.5 inches long. Can be made smaller by 'scrunching" the wire delicately.

Closes with a magnetic clasp to make putting it on by yourself easy! Slide the magnetic clasp when taking off. Do NOT pull on it!
PLEASE NOTE that anyone who wears a pace maker should NOT be wearing anything with a magnetic clasp!

Made with love and magic in the Planet Calamari Studio.

Warning... I Shall Wear Purple...

Warning - When I Am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple

By Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple

with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.

And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter.

I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired
and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
and run my stick along the public railings
and make up for the sobriety of my youth.

I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
and pick the flowers in other people's gardens
and learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
and eat three pounds of sausages at a go
or only bread and pickles for a week
and hoard pens and pencils and beer nuts and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
and pay our rent and not swear in the street
and set a good example for the children.

We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?

So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple

We Are of the Sun
Crochet Wire Necklace & Earrings

The hues of gold and copper combined always remind me of the sunlight reflecting and bouncing across the roof tops of Florence. Church bells ring in the distance. You can almost see flecks of gold Angel dust falling from the sky.

This delicate necklace was created by crocheting plated gold wire with non-tarnish copper wire intertwined are faceted glass crystals and aurora borealis glass seed beads. I added tiny gold bells that quietly tinkle in a magical way. Every time a bell rings an Angel gets its wings! This piece is elegant with a touch of boho chic.

The necklace is about 17 inches long. It can also be wrapped around twice and made into a double strand necklace or several times around the wrist as a boho bracelet.

Closes with a magnetic clasp to make putting it on by yourself easy! Slide the magnetic clasp when taking off. Do NOT pull on it!
PLEASE NOTE that anyone who wears a pace maker should NOT be wearing anything with a magnetic clasp!

The earrings are crocheted copper wire with gold plated wire threaded through with glass aurora borealis seed beads. A small gold bell hangs at the end of each. The bells make a very tiny tinkling sound. The earrings are lightweight and measure about 3 inches long.

Mystical Sea Goddess Wrist Sculpture

This one of a kind wrist cuff was created by crocheting non-tarnish copper wire in hues of vibrant purple, sea green, peacock blue, sea foam green and silver. After the wire was crocheted it was sewn together with more wire to make it stable and to add a more sculptured effect.

Faceted amethyst and clear beads are intertwined along with glass sea blue and aurora borealis glass seed beads creating brilliant reflections of light. I added four violet lamp work glass beads that have a peacock eye pattern. They remind me of creatures of the deep sea hiding in seaweed. I believe this is what mermaids must see while swimming through the coral reefs with their dolphin friends.

You can wear this wrist sculpture with any outfit to create a dazzling effect. Dress up a pair of jeans, prom dress or attire for a formal occasion.

Lightweight. Measures about 7.5 inches long. Can be made smaller by 'scrunching" the wire delicately.

All Wired Up And No Place To Go....

It almost feels like summer. The snow is melted and it is possible to walk the beach collecting shells and sea glass. In a perfect world i would sit on the beach at Winter Island, soaking in the sun, the sea breeze and that wonderful ocean air while crocheting.

My latest addiction is crocheting with wire. Here are a few pieces with sea shells, recycled beads and freshwater pearls.
